Txt4health Community Engagement in Full Swing in NOLA

March 21, 2012

Community engagement efforts are in full swing in the Greater New Orleans area, including partnerships with Walmart and The McFarland Institute (an affiliate of Baptist Community Ministries).

CCBC recently teamed up with Walmart at the 9th Annual Soul Fest at Audubon Zoo, held March 3rd and 4th, to promote txt4health and answer diabetes-related questions. The annual festival attracts approximately 20,000 New Orleans residents and is a celebration of African American food, music, crafts and culture and entertainment.  As corporate sponsor of the event and a member of the txt4health community advisory board, Walmart provided CCBC the opportunity to distribute txt4health materials at their table.  In addition, Walmart had two pharmacists and three interns on site to promote the diabetes risk awareness initiative and answer questions.

CCBC was invited to present txt4health at McFarland Institute's STAR (Strategies to Trim and Reduce) PROJECT weekly meeting at St. Maria Gorreti Church on Saturday, March 3rd.  The McFarland Institute (a division of Baptist Community Ministry) is a txt4health partner and serves on the community advisory board.

During the meeting, a brief presentation and demonstration of the txt4health platform was given to more than 60 volunteer church nurses and McFarland Institute leadership.

The STAR PROJECT is a free twelve week program designed to assist persons suffering from high blood pressure and/or obesity in learning how to combat these serious health issues. 150 volunteer nurses were selected to participate in the STAR PROJECT from several of the McFarland Institute's network of more than 150 churches within the Greater New Orleans area.
